José Carlos Bonilla Martín is a professional Puerto Rican freelance translator. He holds an M.A. in Translation from the Graduate Program in Translation of the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus and a B.Sc. in Computer Science, also from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus. José Carlos is also an avid language learner and he has studied Japanese on his own since 2005. On his free time, he enjoys photography, a big cup of black coffee, reading Japanese comics (in Japanese), and attending wine tastings.

José Carlos is also a Linux enthusiast and is quite fond of the Linux command line.

José Carlos possesses a wide range of translation experience. He has translated financial reports and training materials for financial institutions, curricular information for universities, texts dealing with policy proposals, copywriting related to solar energy, texts on agriculture and geology, among others.

While he can translate texts from many different fields, his specialty is in financial texts. He currently teaches financial translation at his alma mater, the University of Puerto Rico. Within finance, he specializes in financial reports, investment, trading, and financial news.

On the literary side, José Carlos specializes in scripts (plays, screenplays, scenarios), which he enjoys both writing and translating. He has worked as part of a team translating plays that have been presented at the University of Puerto Rico and elsewhere.

In 2022, he joined Traducoop, a Puerto Rican cooperative dedicated to offering translation and interpreting services. In 2024, José Carlos began his first term as President of Traducoop.

Outside of translation, José Carlos also possesses extensive experience administering Linux systems. He also dabbles in photography, wine tasting, and baking. He enjoys reading and watching shows on a variety of topics, including the history of American 20th-century industries, the history of video games, American fast food culture, and the history of anime and manga.

In 2012, José Carlos was chosen as one of the recipients of the US State Department’s prestigious Critical Language Scholarship to study Korean in the city of Jeonju, South Korea. This opportunity was instrumental in him choosing the path of a translator.
